Gabion Basket
Recent years, we can always see the gabion basket. It is very common in the river, road side, bridge side, mountain slope, etc. The gabion basket from Skyhall Fence has other names like gabion box, gabion wall, gabion cage, stone cage,etc. Gabion basket is manufactured from 8×10 double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh, as per ASTM A975-97 Gabions are filled with stones at the project site to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, and weirs for erosion control projects. The steel wire used in the manufacture of the Gabion is heavily Galfan (zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal [Zn-5 Al-MM] alloy) coated soft temper steel. A PVC coating is then applied to provide additional protection for use in polluted, contaminated or aggressive environments: in salt, fresh water, acid soil or wherever the risk of corrosion is present. The PVC coating has a nominal thickness of 0.02 in. (0.50 mm). The Gabion is divided into cells by diaphragms positioned at approximately 3 ft (0.9m) centers. To reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges are selvedged with a wire having a greater diameter. Gabions shall be manufactured and shipped with all components mechanically connected at the production facility.

Woven Type

The installation of gabion basket from Skyhall Fence
There is no need to dig a foundation, all the gabion basket need is a firm base that they will not sink into. Make sure the ground is compact which can be done by compacting hardcore into the leveled ground if necessary. The fill should be of a gradient of 100-200mm as the aperture of the mesh is 75mm, you don’t want rocks coming through the mesh or to leave voids in the gabion basket. Using the lacing wire supplied lace the corners of the baskets tying the ends off with a pair of pliers. There is no need to lace the sides already clipped. Next lace the formed gabion basket together as shown with the blue lines on the diagram. There is an easier way if time is of the essence. You can purchase helicoils, which are long springs that you wind down the corners of the baskets. These springs attach the front and side panel of a gabion basket and its adjacent panel in one go. You only need 2 springs per basket and 2 extra for the end of a run (in the case of 1m cubes). You don’t need lacing wire for the sides when you use this method. The springs are more obvious than the lacing wire. When filling the baskets it is necessary to insert a brace in the middle of the basket. This is important to stop the face bulging when filling. The higher the wall the more important this is as the more force exerted on the face. 1/3rd fill the basket and then create a windless which are the red ties in the diagram to the left. Make a loop from the back to the front of the gabion basket and join the ends with pliers. Put a sturdy flat stone in this loop and turn in circle creating a tourniquet effect which pulls the front tight. Fill on top of this which will hold the stone in place. Repeat 2/3rds of the way up. Finally lace the lids down with the lacing wire provided. Remember to attach all higher rows to the lower ones as well.

Option one: loading into the container in bulk without any packing.
This kind of packing method is very good. If our customer want the price of the gabion basket be much lower, loading into the container in bulk without any packing can reduce the cost of the gabion basket. So, the price can be much lower.
Option two: plastic film wrapped and then loaded on the strong steel pallet.
You can chose the second kind of packing, although the price of this kind of packing is a little higher than the first one, it has itself advantages, such as, the plastic film wrapped outside of the gabion basket can prevent it from being rusted and damped. The strong steel pallet can protect the gabion box from being damaged. It can also make the loading very easy by the forklift and make the gabion box looks very neat.
